Study for the Marikina River Basin
“Birthing Clean Water in the Marikina River Basin”
The Project was a component of the World Bank-financed Manila Third Sewerage Project (MTSP). Manila Water Company, Inc. (MWCI) commissioned this Project to integrate components of the MTSP to address water pollution coming from the east bank of the Marikina River that traverses the municipalities and cities of Rodriguez and San Mateo in the province of Rizal, Marikina City, and Quezon City. The Project sought to contribute to the rehabilitation of the Marikina River by constructing wastewater treatment plants along its riverbanks. The sewerage master plan and the focus on the rehabilitation of the Marikina River served as a catalyst for replication and clean-up model for other critical river basins in the Philippines.
CEST, Inc. prepared the master plan, feasibility study and the conceptual design for a 100 MLD Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP). Field investigations included sewage flow measurements and water quality sampling. The master plan and feasibility study involved the preparation of sewage flow projections; options analysis that included site suitability for the STPs, treatment options, integration with other MWCI projects, flood study, evaluation of urban development trends and patterns, preliminary environmental and social impact assessments, conceptual designs, cost estimates, implementation plan and staging, and financial and economic analyses.
