Southern Mindanao Integrated Coastal Zone Management Project, 2001 – 2006
“Fostering Stewards of the Environment”
The Project was implemented by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) with funding support from the Japan Bank for international Cooperation (JBIC). It involved the implementation of the DENR’s Integrated Environmental Protection and Management Program through the integrated coastal zone management approach. The Project covered the critical coastal and watershed ecosystems of Malalag Bay in Region 1, Balasiao Watershed in Davao del Sur, Sarangani Bay in Sarangani Province, and Mt. Matutum Watershed in General Santos City in South Cotabato, Philippines. It helped achieve the delicate balance between the protection of environmental resources with socio-economic development in the communities through the institutionalization of project development and implementation practices that consider the carrying capacity of land and capacitation of the local government units (LGUs) in natural resources conservation. Project interventions consisted of riverbank slope protection and shoreline siltation and erosion prevention structures, tree planting, and construction of Environmental Conservation and Protection Centers, and Septage Treatment Facilities.
